Garrison Keillor once said that a book is a gift you can open again and again, and I’m a firm believer in that statement. As wonderful as settling down with a good book is, in today’s fast paced world that’s full of distraction, noise and technology, it’s not always as easy as it sounds.
Creating the perfect reading corner is an ideal way to bring out the bookworm in your little one. And believe it or not, creating a dedicated place for you and your children to enjoy your favourite books is a lot easier than you think! Find the perfect place
Choosing the best place for your reading corner is probably the most difficult. It needs to be somewhere that is well lit, and free of distractions, mainly the TV. It doesn’t have to take up vast amounts of space, but it’s a good idea to keep it in an area where mum or dad can join in without too much difficulty. Perhaps there’s a corner in your little ones bedroom that would be ideal? Or maybe a spot under the stairs?
Make it inviting!
A dingy corner wouldn’t make an adult want to sit down and read, so why would your little ones? Make sure that your chosen space is filled with bright, welcoming colours that your children will love. You don’t even have to break out the paint rollers if you don’t want to, you could try hanging up some prints that they might enjoy, some funky artwork or even their favourite book covers!
Make it comfy, cosy
Seating is a very important factor when it comes to your reading corner. You could go for a big squishy armchair that’s ideal for sitting in alone or cuddling up in with mum and dad. If you’re short on space then why not try a large beanbag in a colour that compliments the colours in the room? Even just a cool crash pad would be ideal – floor cushions, pillows even bean bag chairs! The options are endless, it’s whatever suits you and the space best. Don’t forget a nice thick rug too. Just make it as comfy as you can.
Lighting
You need good lighting to read. Natural lighting is best, but you’re going to need some good lamps to help when it’s a little grey and gloomy outside. Squinting to see the words and pictures won’t make it fun for anybody!
The most important thing
Books! And a good healthy supply too! Make sure that the books are well within reach so your little one can pick one up easily and enjoy. A sling bookcase is ideal, or even a very low shelving unit so you can face the front covers outwards; ideal for preschool readers.
