Today my son goes into primary school for his final term.
Just a few more weeks left, and then he’ll be a secondary school child like his sister.
How can this be?
He still seems so young to me, and yet when I stop and really look at him, I see that he’s growing up quickly, that he’s ready to move on.
This final term will be all about SATS for the next few weeks, and then the second half of it should be much more fun.
Aside from the fact they’ll have their SATS out the way, that final half term is usually a nice one as the sun (hopefully) shines, they get ready for sports days, a transition day, a leavers assembly and he has a residential for a week.
It’s going to fly by, I know it.
Fortunately, he’s not in the least bit anxious about SATS so that won’t affect him over these coming weeks. The only thing he’s talking about right now is that cricket season is back!
The days and weeks always go by quickly when they’re at school and their evenings are busy with sport, so I’m going to be back here talking to you about his last days or first days at secondary school in the blink of an eye.
I know I’ve things to organise for him to start his new school. I’ve had some communication from them already and I’m sure once we’re all back at school I’ll hear more and I’ll need to do more. Uniform shopping here we come!
When this was my daughter’s turn, I was only really focused on her starting a new school. This time round, I’m thinking about that for my son, and then the fact that it’ll be the end of an era.
No more primary school. No more visits to the place I’ve been going to daily for years. No more school runs for me.
Since the beginning of Year 6, he’s been walking a few school runs on his own from time to time. Well, with his best mate, not alone. It’s given me a little time to adjust, a little time to get used to my days being longer than six hours.
At first I thought I’d be sad, find it strange, but as he’s done more, I’ve got used to it. Got a taste for it!
I have lots more flexibility in my week, I can get so much more done. I’m glad we’ve eased into it in this way, as it’s got me used to it as much as it has him. He’ll be walking in a different direction to secondary school, but with the same friend, and not that much further.
He’s got this. And I think I have to.
My baby’s growing up, and I’m ready for it.
This final term will bring lots of ‘finals’ and I’m going to savour them as they roll around and do all I can to help my son enjoy them and get ready for his new adventure.
Is this your final term too?
I remember when your little man has just started primary school, time does fly! I hope he has a fantastic last term! x
It really does! Thank you x
