Last night the Husband and I went along to The Alexandra, Birmingham, to see Bat Out of Hell.
As the name suggests, it’s a musical packed with the iconic music of Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf.
This heart-pounding experience, with a powerhouse eight-piece live band on stage, delivers a new production with sprawling multi-level platforms to transport you from Raven’s bedroom to the underground world of the Lost in a visual feast that pushes the boundaries of live theatre.
We both enjoy Meat Loaf’s music, it lives there on our Spotify play lists and we love singing loudly to those power ballads. Badly, of course, but you can’t resist singing along when Paradise By The Dashboard Light comes on, can you?
We didn’t know the storyline or quite what to expect, we just knew we were going to love the music.
The story is set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan, and is something of a dystopian Peter Pan.
‘Obsidian’, is the new city and it’s ruled by the tyrannical Falco. Falco’s daughter Raven is fascinated by the Lost, and as she turns 18, she seeks freedom from her home and father.
The Lost never grow up, and when their leader Strat falls for Raven, the story unfolds.
The show uses the one main stage set, there aren’t set changes, which is refreshing and it worked so well. There are then screens above the stage projecting the live feed from a cameraman on stage. We’ve not see this before, and we loved it. It really gives the show a different, edgier, feel and offers a fresh perspective from the main stage.
I know we didn’t know what to expect, but we did expect it to be good. This far surpassed ‘good’!
The cast were amazing. Every single one of them.
There’s usually a standout performance for me when I go to the theatre, but every single one of them shone, from the main characters through to the entire supporting cast.
Their voices were fantastic and they all threw themselves completely into their roles. It made the chemistry on the stage come alive and drew you into the story so that the time flew by and before we knew it, we were enjoying the finale song.
The full house standing ovation at the end of the night speaks for itself.
We spent the drive home singing along to Meat Loaf, and yes, I’m playing those same songs as I write this. So many great songs!
If you like Meat Loaf’s music, you cannot miss this. If you don’t really know any of his songs, go along and you’re sure to be adding them to your playlists, too. The cast will blow you away.
Bat Out Of Hell is running at The Alexandra Birmingham Mon 10 Feb – Sat 22 Feb 2025, go see it.
Is this one you’d enjoy?
