Do you ever have those days when you just need a little pick up? There may not be a particular reason, you just feel in need of a little boost or treat? Well guess what I turn to, yes, books are my comfort place.
I think we all have our comfort places. And we probably have a few, most of us have a variety of interests, and can pick from a few depending on our mood.
For me, I could easily light a scented candle and play my music, pop over to a Korean skincare website or browse house plants in my local garden centre.
These are my comfort places, they cheer me up when I feel in need of cheering up.
But whilst all of these make me happy, they will never be able to compete with books.
There are those days when I just want to read all the books and buy all the books.
Books are my comfort place. And I think a big part of the reason that they are my mainstay and I think always will be, is that they have been there for me all of my life.
I could and would lose hours in my books as a child.
I have memories of reading into the early hours of the night, our home silent, my little lamp glowing.
I can remember lying on our sofa absorbed in a book, while my family existed around me, knowing that I was quite content in whatever fictional world I was currently inhabiting.
I mastered the art of being able to read anywhere, with any number of distractions, for any pocket of time available to me. It’s a skill that comes in handy regularly in a busy, and often noisy, family household!
I always have a book at the ready, even in those times when I’m in a bit of a reading slump, there will be one there waiting for me whenever I want it.
And I can guarantee that a quick trip to a local book store, a mooch around a National Trust second hand bookshop, a scroll through various bookish websites, or even just rearranging my own bookshelves and rediscovering all of the wonderful books I am yet to read will make me smile.
Ooh, and don’t even get me started on a trip to the library, all of those free books just waiting for me!
If my day isn’t going well, if I need to relax, if I need a good night’s sleep, if I want to laugh or cry, if I have time to fill, it’s going to be books.
Books are my comfort place.
What’s your comfort place?
Books have always brought great comfort to me. I remember when I was young and my dad and I would read together all the time. He instilled a wonderful love of reading in me. I would read anything that I could get my hands on. Nancy Drew was the best. Most of all, reading gave me somewhere to escape. To pretend things were better when they weren’t. I have travelled around the world within the books that I read. Reading is a wonderful gift to pass on to a child and help them to develop a sense of language and adventure. My grandson absolutely loves his book.
I couldn’t agree with you more. You can go anywhere if you have a book with you, and it’s such a simple hobby to have.
