Colouring For Wellbeing

If the January blues are getting to you, you know that I am going to advocate relaxing with paper. There are so many wonderful ways that paper can help you, whether you’re reading, journaling, sketching, or perhaps colouring? It’s this last one that I want to focus on today as it’s one of the highest rated stress relievers in the craft world.

Crafting in general, is a great way to boost your mental health.

Crafts such as crochet, pottery, knitting, quilting, pebble art and diamond painting all seem to have had a real resurgence over recent years. We’re looking for ways to unwind, ways to decompress and have fun.

Colouring for Wellbeing

There’s something in the action of colouring shapes and patterns that helps to calm the mind and lower stress levels

The act of colouring promotes mindfulness, it gives you the chance to ‘play’, and if you add it to your night-time routine, it can hep you to switch off and sleep.

I think colouring is also a big hit because it’s so accessible.

We all coloured as kids, it’s something we know how to do, and for many of us it has those happy childhood connections.

Colouring isn’t something we feel we need to learn how to do, we can be confident that we can sit down and switch off the moment that we start with it.

There are some very intricate designs and colouring books you can try, but equally, you could just colour in a few simple shapes and take it easy, and we can all do that.

As well as being something we all feel we can do, it’s also cheap and easy to get started with it, another thing in its favour.

You may well have a few colouring pencils or pens in your home now, so you can start straight away. Pop over to Pinterest now and you’ll find plenty of colouring sheets that you can print off and get scribbling with.

Alternatively, you might decide that you’d like to treat yourself and give this hobby a go. If that’s the case, you only need to choose some pens or pencils, or both, and a colouring book or two to get started with.

For pens, it might be worth going for dual ended colouring pens, so you’ve both options for different designs. Or go for good quality colouring pencils with a variety of colours.

There’s then a wonderful variety of colouring books you can get, from cosy cute designs to bold fun patterns through to those bestselling colouring books that we’ve all seen and wanted to try.

Maybe you could even try colouring by numbers or a little extra stress relief with sweary colouring books (do not click on that one if you want to avoid seeing those!). There seems to be a colouring book for every interest out there, which shows how huge a hobby this has become.

I have a few books, and of course I have plenty of pens and pencils, so as I sign off from writing this, I’m going to go and give it a go, as it’s been a while.

Cup of tea, scented candle burning, music playing, bring on the colouring!

Could this be something for you?
