Easy Mail Art Tutorial

Today I want to share with you a simple and easy mail art tutorial.

This is something I get asked about regularly, so I thought it would be handy to share a few tips and suggestions today and walk you through decorating an envelope.

This takes just a few minutes and is nice and easy to do. Your penpal will love it!

Now, as I always say with these things, you don’t have to do this when you send happy mail.

Happy mail is about the connection you make with your pen friend, not about the envelope!

However, I know some of you want to give this a go and get creative from time to time, so I thought I would share an easy way to decorate an envelope.

Easy Mail Art Tutorial

Cover the majority of the envelope with some pretty paper

This can be scraps of paper, magazine, wrapping paper, whatever you have!

Aim to nearly fill the front of the envelope with this, it will be the base for your design.

If you want, you can finish here and you would still have levelled up your envelope from a plain white envelope.

Pop on an address label

This might be a little bit of paper cut out or perhaps a label of some sort.

You just need to ensure that you will have room to clearly write an address on your design, quite an important part of posting a letter!

Add a torn strip

This is a nice and easy way to add a little fun to the design.

Instead of cutting some paper, tear a little and stick this into the top left corner of your design.

Now add some washi tape

The final step is to add some strips of washi tape to finish off the design.

You can place these wherever you like. I’d suggest across the bottom of the envelope and then some going vertically.

It can be effective to place these strips at different lengths and in opposite directions, and you might choose to use a couple of different tapes.

If you’re out of washi, try coloured lines, doodles, stamps or stickers.

And you are done!

How easy is this?

Of course, this is just a step by step tutorial to act as a guide to get you started.

You can play around with these ideas and I’m sure once you’ve started creating a few envelopes you’ll soon develop your own style and play around with lots of different layouts.
