After many discussions in our house, we have finally decided where we want to go on holiday this summer.
We have booked our flights, and I’ve arranged all of the uninteresting things such as travel insurance, airport parking, plane seats, checked ESTAs are still valid and I’ve made provisional (free to cancel and move around) hotel bookings.
The bare bones of our trip are booked, we know where we’re flying in and out of, but then the rest is still a blank canvas, so the fun can now begin.
We’ll be travelling to New York, a city that we’ve been to just once before about twenty years ago, so it’s completely new to the children. New York’s the only place we’ve visited previously on this trip, so we have lots of new places we can the explore.
We are flying home from Boston 11 days later, a city that we are keen to explore and we plan to day trip from there up to Salem, somewhere I have always wanted to visit.
At the moment, we’re thinking a few nights in New York, then moving on and travelling through Connecticut to explore Gilmore Girls inspired places, a day at Six Flags New England, onto Boston and then onto Cape Cod for our last few nights before driving back to Boston for our flight.
The Husband’s looking into the best places for bagels, pizzas and cookies, the girl’s looking at Broadway shows and the boy’s interested in anything sporty while we’re there. They are doing there thing, while I’m over here making it happen!
We’re thinking we’ll use the Hop On/Off buses to see quite a bit of New York, and then we’re working out those must-sees at the moment. We know to fully explore and appreciate it we’d need weeks, but we have three days, so we need to pick a few highlights.
At the moment, that includes Top of the Rock, walking the Brooklyn Bridge, the High Line, MoMA, Central Park, 9/11 museum, Times Square and then a long list of places to shop, stop by and eat at.
We’ll then have a couple of days travelling up to Boston, where we’ll visit those pretty towns like New Milford, Washington Depot, Litchfield and spend a day at Six Flags. We always like to get to a theme park, and we’ve never been to a Six Flags, so my girl can get her coaster fix there.
In Boston, we’re thinking we’ll walk the Freedom Trail which should see us taking in lots of great sights in the city. We’d then like to visit Fenway Park and Harvard (my Legally Blonde heart is excited about this!) and of course drive up to Salem.
Then, in theory, we’ll slow the pace a little and visit the seaside and Cape Cod. I see us browsing round the towns, relaxing on the beaches, and soaking up some sunshine, before heading back to Boston to fly home.
These are our thoughts at the moment, but the plan has changed just over the last week, so we are still flexible. Anything other than those flights could change, so we’re enjoying figuring out those things that we want to do and ensuring that each of us to get to explore those things that interest us.
It’s fun to be planning a road trip again, and it’s great to have something for us to all look forward to.
Have you visited any of these places? Do you have any must-dos or local insider knowledge to share?
Hi Jocelyn! I grew up on the North Shore of Boston. If you have any questions about Boston and Salem please email me. I’ve also lived in New York and Connecticut if I can help there too. Your trip sounds so fun!
Julie
