Siblings August 2024

If you’ve been reading here for many years, you’ll know that I used to share a Siblings update every month. It was fun to stop and think about how the kids were growing up with one another every month, the changes that I could see, the bond they had.

It’s been years since I’ve done one, 4 years in fact, this is the last one. I thought today, I’d share a little update on what I’m seeing now.

In my last update I wrote “I just hope that as they grow, they continue to be so close to one another”, well, the good news is that they are! For now anyway.

Sometimes, the teen is exasperated by the tween. Sometimes, the teen needs some of her own space. And she gets it, she needs it. But on the whole, she’s happy spending time with us all, and these two continue to get on well.

We were at a get together on my son’s last day of school recently. My daughter had had a half day so was happy to be able to go and meet her brother on his last day of primary school.

That in itself, probably tells you that they’re still close. Not many older siblings were showing up!

I looked over at one point and Boo was giving Little Man a piggy back around, nothing unusual there. To me. But then a couple of the mums commented on how nice it was to see them together and getting on, as their kids of the same ages didn’t.

I guess I take it for granted that these two do. They always have done, always.

Don’t get me wrong, they can definitely annoy each other at times, but generally speaking, they love having one another.

They have different interests, as Boo lives for music, Little Man for sport. But they take an interest in one another’s hobbies, and both are happy to sit and watch films together or read together. They’re sharing books now, which I love to see, as Boo passes on her favourite reads to her brother.

I find it’s the weekends or the school holidays that they are their closest. During the week, they both have things going on, but when they have a spare hour or two at the weekend, they gravitate towards each other.

They take themselves off together and disappear into one of their rooms, just chatting with music playing. Or they grab some board games and it’s not long before the laughter begins.

Their personalities just seem to work with each other. Their interests are just different enough and just similar enough for them to never feel they’re competing, always complementing.

I love that they’re close. A sibling relationship is special. I always got on with my brother when we were younger, and still do now that we’re 47 and 44. Here’s hoping these two will be saying that same thing at those ages.

I guess we’ll see how the relationship shifts when Little Man hits those teen years.

Maybe I’ll drop by and share an update in another 4 years time?!

Boo aged 14 years and 10 months, Little Man aged 11 years and 11 months. Love them.

Sharing is caring!
