You have always meant to give yoga a try. It’s one of those things that you keep meaning to get round to. You think you might enjoy it. You know it’ll be good for you. But it’s hard to know where to begin with it, so maybe one day. No, no, I am here to help you to start yoga this week!
I had been meaning to get round to starting yoga for many years. And finally, at the grand old age of 41, I have done it! Since I have, I have been amazed by the number of people who have told me that they keep meaning to give it a go as they think they would enjoy it, but it just lurks in the background as something that they would like to do one day. Well, that day is today, let’s get going and get into yoga this week. Read on, and with just three steps, you will be doing it. Put it off no longer!
Get Your Yoga Equipment
This one is so easy to do, and to be honest, you don’t have to have this to start. But I found that it helped me and it pushed me into doing it more, so to get cracking, order yourself a yoga mat.
I did a fair bit of research before buying, as I always do, so you don’t have to! This mat was recommended in a couple of articles that I read as a good mat without breaking the bank. The reviews on Amazon were positive so I ordered this mat and I’m very happy with it.
Now, the clothing is again an easy one. You can do this in your pyjamas, that’ll be fine. Just go for loose fitting, comfortable clothes, and I always do it with bare feet. If you want some clothes for it, I like these yoga pants and any tee or vest will work.
Choose Your Yoga Space
To get you started with yoga, this week (yes, you’re really doing it), you’ll do it at home.
Starting yoga at home means you have hurdled the barrier of struggling to find a class that suits you on location and time. It also means that you don’t have to steel yourself to feel confident enough to attend a class – What if I can’t do it? What if I feel silly? What if they’re not friendly? Whilst I suspect it’ll all be fine, I absolutely get this, so let’s not worry about any of this and get cracking at home.
You will be practising yoga at home, so where can you do it? You don’t need a huge space, just a clear floor and access to a screen that will stream YouTube. Ideally, you’ll be free from distractions to do this, so an empty home is perfect, but if that can’t be done, take yourself off to somewhere away from others (or all do it together!).
Choose Your Yoga Video
Go to YouTube and type in yoga class and you’ll be amazed by how many options you have to choose from.
As I have written before, I practice Kundalini yoga, and I would definitely recommend it. As well as the array of benefits that this type of yoga brings, it is very accessible and good for beginners. As such, it might be worth searching for Kundalini yoga to get you going.
Here are a few yoga videos worth trying:

Brett Larkin runs a series that explores different kinds of yoga, so you might want to try those to see what you like.
Yoga with Adriene is very popular, so if you’d like to stick with her, subscribe and follow her classes.
And you are ready to get started with yoga!
You do not even need to leave the house to complete any of these steps. You can click and order your yoga gear now, clear your living room and get one of these videos up on YouTube. That’s it. You are then, finally after all this time, giving yoga a go.
If you like it, if your confidence builds, go find a class. I actually started with a local class that my friend found, which is where I discovered the accessibility of Kundalini yoga. Of course, there are many kinds and many classes, but take a look around and take the plunge if you want to. But whether you go to a class or not, you are still doing yoga. Go you!
Please do let me know if this has helped you to finally get around to starting yoga? I’d love to think that I have been helpful!
