October already, the kids have had a full month of school term.
My son has started secondary school and he’s getting used to being in Year 7. My daughter’s back to school, into Year 10 and her GCSE’s.
I have both of them in secondary school now, so I have no more school runs and no more ties to the primary school that we were at for a decade.
I thought it might feel strange, more different than it does, somehow.
I thought it’d feel like I had lots more time, but it doesn’t! My son actually gets home earlier than he did at primary school, so my afternoon’s feel a bit shorter. I don’t go out on the morning school run now, but I find that time fills easily with work and chores and I’ve still been meeting friends for walks. The days are actually flying by.
It helps that the kids are both settling in well and there’s been no drama with either of them.
Little Man seems to be settled and happy. He’s made friends with several children and there’s now a little group of them that he spends time with. His best friend since nursery school is with him in the same form, and they continue to be as close as ever. They’ve signed up to go on the school Residential this month, and are looking forward to that.
He’s getting to know his timetable and teachers, he’s happy he knows his way round school and he’s joined a lunchtime basketball club. He also loves choosing his school dinner and drink every day! His homework’s all getting done on time and without me having to prompt him (so far) and he’s comfortable there. The new level of independence suits him and he’s taking it in his stride.
Outside of school, his cricket season has just ended and he was pleased to win Clubman of the Year there. His football season’s just getting going and so far, his new team are doing well and he’s really enjoying playing with them.
My girl is enjoying her chosen GCSE subjects and having so much more of them on her timetable. She’s not as thrilled about the double Maths days or triple Science days, but she’s adjusting!
As always at her school, the assessments and tests are in full swing, and she’s doing well. There’s definitely been more homework so far than she’s had before, but still perfectly manageable and still several evenings when she has none.
She’s happy with her subjects and for the first time since she started at the school, she has several lessons a week with her best friend. They love that! They’ve been friends since they were babies and finally, finally, they are together!
School work has been somewhat overshadowed with the excitement for her birthday, which was last week, and auditions and preparations for this year’s school musical. She’s been a part of this for the past couple of years, and she always enjoys getting involved. I’m sure this year will be no different, and the rehearsals will soon be in full swing.
She’s also getting involved with after school football and has just signed up to complete her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award this year. Fortunately, her hike and camp is in the summer months so I’m hoping she doesn’t get too much bad weather!
A month in and we’re OK so far. I never assume it’ll remain plain sailing, you don’t know what’s round the corner, but for now, we have happy kids so that makes for a happy mum.
It sounds like the kids have settled in well at school, I am so glad especially for your Little Man. It’s such a big change from primary school.
They have, which is always a relief. Thanks, it’s a huge change, but so far, he’s taken it in his stride x
