Last night the Husband and I went along to The Alexandra, Birmingham, to see The Bodyguard The Musical.
If you’ve not seen this one or heard about it, here’s a little about The Bodyguard….
Following attempts on a young superstar’s life, a former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer is hired to protect his new charge from a prolific and determined stalker. But Farmer discovers to his chagrin, that show business works differently from what he is used to; Rachel Marron is headstrong, stubborn and a diva to boot. And she doesn’t take kindly to following orders. A charged tug-of-war ensues, as each try to press their boundaries of power – but what they don’t expect, is to fall in love.
The Bodyguard features a multitude of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits, including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Run to You, I Have Nothing, How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and one of the greatest hit songs of all time – THAT cover of I Will Always Love You.
We’d seen the film but never the show, so this was a new experience for both of us and we were looking forward to hearing so many of those huge hits.
We both enjoy Whitney Houston’s music, I saw her live in concert many years ago and yes, she was as good as you’d expect.
She’s one of those artists with hit after hit, and it wasn’t until we were watching this that we remembered how many of hers we love. Of course, we had to listen to her music on the journey home after this.
This is a show that perfectly blends moments of humour with high drama and it just works and flows.
The characters really came to life, and you’re completely invested in the story, whether you’re familiar with the film or not.
The cast all delivered, and Emily Williams was sensational as Rachel Marron. She has such an amazing voice, as you’d have to have to be able to carry off Whitney Houston songs, and she most certainly carried them off. I Will Always Love You was absolutely sensational.
Ayden Callaghan’s Frank Farmer was perfectly played, as he projected serious and diligent along with playfulness and emotion.
The production was fabulous, the dancers lit up the stage and the sets were amongst the best I’ve seen at the theatre.
I don’t think it could fail to impress you and I was completely immersed, the time flew by.
The finale was fun, get ready to sing at the end, it’ll put you in a party mood!
The Bodyguard was every bit as good as we were hoping it would be.
I’ve just this morning been going on about it to a friend, encouraging her to go as I know she’d love it. When you’re recommending it the morning after to your friends, you know it’s a good one.
The Bodyguard is running at The Alexandra Birmingham December 4 – 30, 2023. Go see it!
Is this one you’d enjoy?
