The Pros And Cons Of Different Curtain Fabrics: Which One Is Right For You?

This is a collaborative post

There’s a surprising amount of thought that needs to go into choosing the right curtains for your home. Each room will likely require a slightly different approach, with bedrooms suiting thicker, lined curtains and kitchens suiting an option that’s slightly more casual like cafe curtains.

One of the many things you’ll need to decide is what fabric you’ll go with. There’s an overwhelming variety of options available, making it important that you do your research – if you’re struggling to make a decision, read on to found out which one is right for you.

Cotton

Cotton curtains from suppliers like Woodyatt Curtains are a versatile option that’s widely used as a result of their relative affordability, durability, and natural feel. You can often get cotton curtains in a wide variety of colours, making it easy to match an option with your existing aesthetic!

As cotton is quite durable, you should be fine to wash your curtains relatively regularly without damaging the fabric, making them a good solution for busier households with kids or pets. As always though, you need to make sure that you follow the washing instructions on the label.

Silk

Silk is a word that brings to mind images of luxuriousness and fairytale princesses, and for good reason. Silk is a gorgeous fabric, and will definitely add to the aesthetic of whatever room you put them in.

That being said, there are some downsides; silk is a relatively delicate fabric, meaning you shouldn’t wash silk curtains too frequently. Also, if you do need to replace them at some point, it won’t be cheap – silk is pretty expensive, so may not be the best option for those operating on a budget.

Velvet

Velvet curtains can be absolutely wonderful for rooms where you want to achieve a weighty, classy feel. The heavy yet soft texture feels incredibly opulent, and even if they’re unlined, velvet curtains can be very effective at providing thermal insulation and blocking sunlight.

That being said, like silk, velvet curtains can be relatively expensive, and if you want them to last you’ll need to take good care of them. Moths love velvet, and it’s easily stained; also, if you go for a darker colour, you’ll likely see the colour fade over time if you leave it exposed to sunlight.

Sheer curtains

Sheer curtains aren’t technically all made from a single material – they’re generally made from lightweight, translucent fabrics like voile, chiffon, or lace. They’re a great way of stopping direct sunlight from entering a room, or providing a touch of privacy for spaces that people can see directly into.

They’re not well suited to all spaces though; sheer curtains aren’t effective at retaining heat, and as a result of their thin, lightweight construction, they won’t stand the test of time like cotton or other hardier fabrics.

By now, you should feel a little better prepared to go out and buy the perfect curtains for your home. From practical and affordable options like cotton, to rich, luxurious fabrics like velvet, there’s something for everyone.
