Last night my daughter and I went along to The Alexandra, Birmingham, to see one of my favourite musicals, The Rocky Horror Show.
If this is new to you, The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit their favourite college professor.
I’ve never seen this one live, though I’ve seen the picture show many times and know the songs well. My daughter had never seen it so didn’t know what to expect, though she’d heard some of the music before as I like to play it.
I had forewarned her that people would probably dress up, but I don’t think she quite expected so many fabulous costumes and so much audience participation. It was like no show we’d seen before.
It was so good! So, so good! I’d say it’s the best theatre performance I’ve ever been to, and I have enjoyed a lot of shows.
The songs in this musical are amongst my favourites from any musical, and all were performed with great enthusiasm, so many great voices.
It’s hard to pick a stand out performance amongst the cast, which gives you an idea of how good they all were.
Being so familiar with the film, I was expecting for the live show to not quite live up to that. Tim Curry being absolutely iconic in his role as Frank N Furter and it being so beloved by me. But it did live up to it, it blew me away, the casting was just spot on.
As you’d expect, there was plenty of audience engagement.
From people dressing up (not at all compulsory, plenty of people didn’t) to shouting out and singing along, it was a very immersive experience.
We danced to the Time Warp, laughed at the many heckles (are they even heckles at this performance, or just part of the show?!), and got lost in the entire story.
The performance time absolutely flew by, I didn’t want it to end.
When it did end, as all good things have to, the encore was fabulous.
If you’ve seen this before or seen the film, you’ll know it’s not one for younger children, but my teen daughter really enjoyed it. She was keen to pop the soundtrack on for us as we drove home, a sure sign that she liked it. And as you can tell, I loved every second of it.
The Rocky Horror Show is running at the Alexandra Birmingham Mon 27 Mar until Sat 1 Apr 2023. Go see it!
