With the kids loving their new pets and all things guinea pigs, including pretending to be them several times a day, I thought it would be fun to create a little small world play around them. My children wanted to make this about their guinea pigs, but any pet goes!
You’ll need:
A drawer/tray
Hay/straw
Play dough
Googly eyes
Play food
Invitation to play:
I got the small world ready, and invited the children to come and create their guinea pigs, name them, and then make them toys and keep them happy.
There was a lot of wheeking noises!
I enjoyed seeing what they chose to do, as there’s no way my imagination is ever able to come up with everything that my kids come up with. Little Man took barely seconds to make his pet, as he simply popped two eyes on the lump of play dough, and was away! He made it a bed, popped it inside, gave it food and foraged about. Boo spent a lot more time creating, and she made her pet a carrot, a birthday cake, sang to her, and then got her nibbling it. Finally, they teamed up and made a huge cake, which basically involved putting everything into the bowl as ingredients and mixing it all up and then the hay started flying everywhere and I decided it was best to call it a day! It was a fun one to do, and so very simple to set up.
I love doing these invitation to plays, as I never know quite how the kids will play with it, and they always enjoy them. Would your little ones like playing pets?

Oh this is a nice idea 🙂 May give it a go, I have been looking for some small world play ideas and toddler bear seems very interested in the pets at the pet store 🙂
It’s so simple to do, and sweet to see what they do with their ‘pets’!
What a lovely small-world play idea. Thanks so much for sharing with this week’s #pinitparty. Have pinned and shared 🙂
Thank you, they had a lot of fun with it 🙂
This is a fab activity Jocelyn. I hope your real guinea pigs are settling in well? It’s lovely to theme an activity around them x
They loved it! Oh yes, they are so adorable and are getting much more confident around us now x
Lovely idea and they look like they are having so much fun. I can imagine my son being the same as yours, just adding eyes, while my girls would take time to make lots of bits for it. Love the creations.
